hello ro jeyneofpoole boatgirl. The fitzjames news has rocked my world and rotted my brain because I love a historical mystery solved. As a AMC terror and a real life terror fan, what texts would you recommend to someone who just watched amc terror and now wants to read the research on the real thing

i love love love when i get this question ok. if your first exposure to the franklin expedition was the terror i think your best jumping-off point is michael palin’s erebus: the story of a ship. yes he’s the guy from monty python, no he’s not a professional historian, but it’s entertaining and well-researched and a great way to familiarize yourself with the general concepts that other more elaborate texts will touch on. then you just GOTTA read dr. owen beattie’s frozen in time, it’s one of the most iconic pieces of franklin literature and the descriptions of the beechey exhumations are so near and dear to me. some of the lead stuff is on shaky legs now, but this book was revolutionary for the longest time. then there’s may we be spared to meet on earth edited by russell a. potter et. al., which is a collection of letters to and from members of the franklin expedition. after you’ve read the others listed here you’ll be crazy enough to cry over this one.

a more niche read that i just finished was david murphy’s arctic fox, which is a biography of leopold mcclintock and his arctic career. it’s super compelling and mcclintock lived a very interesting life and seemed like a pretty okay guy especially for the time; murphy does a really good job and i don’t see this one recommended at all but it’s actually good. there are some minor issues with some little details surrounding, like, the peglar papers, for example, but that’s what the other books are for. honorable mentions include (ie they’re on my shelf staring me down) ice ghosts by paul watson, unraveling the franklin mystery: inuit testimony by david c. woodman, the man who ate his boots by anthony brandt, james fitzjames: the mystery man of the franklin expedition by william battersby, and icebound in the arctic by michael smith. but do NOT and i mean do NOT under any circumstances read dan simmons’ absolute drivel that novel isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. just watch the show and read these. ok love you byeeeee

Do you think that Tenel Ka uses the Force to dull any phantom pain from her missing arm? (I also need the distraction)

WHAT a great question :D with the disclaimer that I am not an expert in this topic:

phantom limb pain is common from what I’ve read, so it’s very likely to be something tenel ka would experience. I think especially early lightsabers TK might at first try to ignore it or power through it - lightsabers features so much growth for her, but you can’t tackle everything at once, yknow. So much of her feelings about being an amputee are tied up in her desire for bodily autonomy and independence, and so she might try to hold onto mentally controlling or ignoring pain - however, in lightsabers, she also comes to the realization of considering her use of the force another aspect of herself, not something that takes away from what she can accomplish. The force having application as a disability aid would probably tie in really well to her arc here.

noting that she was on a hapan ship when most immediately dealing with her injury, I think she might distrust doctors and be disinclined to see one about this due to everyone who was there being more motivated by the queen mother’s agenda than her welfare, and being extremely ableist to her in the process as I recall. In contrast, I think the early chapter in lightsabers where she considers and contrasts her experiences with Luke’s provide an indication that she might eventually pick his brain about possible force using techniques for controlling this type of pain. They are shown to have a relatively close relationship in this era. we don’t get much detail on like, medical facilities in Luke’s Jedi academy (the series is a bit sparse on logistics), but I could still see TK experiencing some friction depending on how they operate.

and of course this aspect of force powers would fall under the control umbrella of we use the control, sensing, alter classification of force powers, and is more specifically and aptly named control pain. I am curious if a Jedi could attempt to use this power for long term pain, or if it would be a strain in and of itself for that. One thing I read said that phantom limb pain may eventually dissipate with time, so perhaps using control pain might bring one to a point where it’s not needed. The force also could maybe be used to directly administer some treatments that are attempted to alleviate pain like nerve stimulation. Either way, this would be something she would likely be getting information from Luke about, and possibly training, as there might be some danger in attempting to learn this as an unsupervised student.

…. as for mari 😭 WELL . i think she definitely sets like . a bedtime and a ’waking up’ time for me lol she’s a control freak to the max. mayyybe she’d kiss me awake but i think it’s more likely she’ll just expect me to wake up from the alarm she set </3 she does, however, give me a kiss before leaving for work (on the rare occurrence i have a day off without her)…. basically we sort of wake up on our own, but she decides most little things like that for me :3

SNIFFLES arigojo … T_T mickey i miss him sm </3 this is one of the few selfships i have where the cooking / cleaning / etc duties are v equal ….. gojo is great at cooking he just doesn’t have much interest for it. and i don’t mind cooking but i like being babied LOL so we find a middle ground … i guess we’re just pretty similar. some days i wake up to fresh pancakes in the kitchen, other times i wake up early to make him coffee <3 but mostly he prob orders food lmao.

fluffy pancakes + coffee with plenty of sweetener <- is his go-to. if it’s a rare day off he’ll take orange juice instead. the pancakes are usually topped with something, whipped cream + strawberries maybe…. i’m more keen on a sandwich or fruit bowl so he orders that for me :3 along w a tea of my choice <3

🛏️ - who wakes up first? what do they do when they first wake up?

WELL . i think oliver probably wakes up first …. ? we have talked about this before but . in my mind he tends to wake up early while not being that much of a morning person LMAO so he’s just kinda …. sleepy and groggy and will have to drag himself out of bed. right into a cup of coffee. i am v similar so honestly assuming i lived with him … i’d prob be waking up around the same time . not to spend time with him obviously that’s gay but, you know !!! i do :/ get clingy on mornings like that . so i’m just rubbing my eyes and nuzzling against his bicep while he sleepily makes coffee for us both.

sometimes i def stay in bed longer though. and he’ll spend a lot of time staring at me ://// prob pokes my cheek and tells me to get up (esp if i have a lecture that day) but i just whine and roll to my side . the reverse is true sometimes too 😭 if he doesn’t Have to get out of bed he will deadass hold me down and force me to sleep in ….. sickening (it’s comfy i guess)
